Mount Popa is a volcano 1518 metres (4981 feet) above sea level, and located in central Burma (Myanmar) about 50 km southeast of Bagan (Pagan) in the Pegu Range. It can be seen from the Ayeyarwady (Irrawaddy) River as far away as 60 km in clear weather. Mount Popa is perhaps best known for the nearby stunningly picturesque Popa Taungkalat monastery atop an outcrop. The Popa Taungkalat (Taung Kalat) Shrine is home to 37 Mahagiri Nats, or spirits. Statues depicting the Nats are at the base of the Shrine.

Most people visit Mount Popa as a daytrip from nearby Bagan. It's only about 50km away but due to the conditions of the road and vehicles, it will take at least 1hr 30min to get there.

Drive to Salay, which developed as an expansion of the city of Bagan in the late 12th Century, and much of the architecture dates back to this historic period. The appeal in Salay is its large number of attractive monasteries.
Continue on to Mt. Popa, which rose from the ground in a massive earthquake in 442 BC. Mt. Popa is famous as the abode of the Nats (Spirit Gods) and has a panoramic view of the surrounding plains. We can also make a visit to one of the local families who make toddy palm juice for sale from the toddy palms.
